The ‘piece maps’ below map out the occurrences of composition work on individual pieces in relation to other pieces being created at that time, pulling together patterns of work over the course of one calendar year for each map. They draw on categorisation of the notebook page images uploaded to this site, with each ● or empty cell representing one spread of two pages. Each ● indicates that work was undertaken on the piece whose title is in the leftmost column of that row.

Because I do not maintain a strict space limit in these books (some days may require more than one page; spreads usually represent two days, but may be only one, or may condense multiple days where little needed to be captured), the spatial arrangement of the maps should be accepted as being a little imprecise. They are a way to visualise ebbs and flows of work, and to more clearly indicate which pieces were being worked on around the same time. They provide a more easily comprehensible view, perhaps, of how work on different pieces operates in the context of everyday life, than can be easily discerned from perusing individual volumes. However, if you require more precise data, then I recommend you peruse the relevant book(s) from the View by volume page.

I have included only maps for the years where the combined composition journal/diary format has been in use (March 2019-present). The more complete record provided by daily logging in these books provides a more even sense of time across the diagrams to aid comparisons, and also because the altered books spreads on this site are both incomplete and often dated only vaguely. Some altered book pages are included where these have been accurately dated (usually identified in the journal/diary entry for that day).

I am continuing to develop this approach to data visualisation in this site. If you find it useful or have any suggestions for how it might be improved, please contact Caitlin.
